ACGA May Newsletter 2020

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Resilience, spirit, strength, vigor, determination, vision, sagacity, insight, ingenuity and perhaps a bit of doggedness; it seems to me that it is these are the traits that creativity demands.

Be we creators, or lovers of the creative, it is times like these when we need to access these qualities the most.

Please support our participating ACGA artists in the 10 Days of ACGA online event.

The entire affair is the result of all the above-mentioned traits. It exists because people came together and created portal for artists to sell and for customers to buy. We also added another component. Many artists have chosen to give a percentage of their sales to a non-profit of their choice. Learn a bit more about what organizations our participants care about.

So please…

Visit ACGA.net. Share the link. Post it on social media. Tell a friend. Support the arts. Support the artists.

And maybe, get a lovely new piece of beauty to spark your creativity as well!

10 Days of ACGA Online

Because we were unable to have the ACGA Clay and Glass festival in Palo Alto this year, many artists of ACGA have gotten together to host an online event. “10 Days of ACGA Online Clay & Glass” will run from Aug. 1-10 at www.acga.net and will feature an incredible array handmade work.
85 artists have provided links to their online sales sites where a variety of beautiful art that can be shopped 24/7 and shipped anywhere. Each artist will be offering their work for sale through their own portal, in their own way.

In an effort to help other non-profit organizations, many of the artists will donate a percentage of their proceeds to other non-profit organizations that they feel passionate about.

Here is a link to a great article about the sale – Palo Alto Online

LAFAYETTE

Jennifer Perlmutter Fine Art

Domesticated - Jennifer PerlmutterDomesticated,  through August 15
An Exhibition by Dana DeKalb & Jane Fisher

“A rabbit’s foot may bring good luck to you, but it brought none to the rabbit.”
-Ambrose Bierce, Epigrams of a Cynic

DeKalb and Fisher’s exhibition, entitled Domesticated, toys with the relationship between humans and animals. Whether in the wild, in captivity, or on your sofa, the context of each image – utilitarian, scary, or cute — reveals the contradiction between our desire for connection with other species and our need to control them.
The show consists of groupings of small paintings as well as larger life-size paintings and drawings. Subject matter includes encyclopedia-style presentations of over-bred dogs, and a series of animals observing their various forms of containment – a new take on “sheltering in place”. All are animals that have no experience in a realm without human interaction and in many cases owe their existence to human intervention.
DeKalb and Fisher approach their subjects with distinct but complementary styles. Both artists have devoted decades to observing and recording human psychological interactions with both empathy and irony. They have each exhibited since the 1980’s in numerous public venues and galleries nationwide, such as Hackett-Freedman, Marx-Zavaterro, George Krevsky, and Charles Campbell.

LOS ANGELES – Craft in America

Here Now - A Humble LegacyHere/Now | A Humble Legacy: Two Exhibitions of Yunomi
7/18/2020 – 9/19/2020
https://www.craftinamerica.org/exhibition/here-now-a-humble-legacy-two-exhibitions-of-yunomi
Upon the centennial of the founding of Leach Pottery, the Craft in America Center is pleased to present two exhibitions celebrating the cup as object and the impact of Bernard Leach on studio ceramics.

A Humble Legacy is an exhibition of approximately two dozen works of historic and contemporary cups made by a selection of artists affiliated with Leach Pottery and others who continue in its legacy. Master potters Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada established St. Ives Pottery (Leach Pottery) in Cornwall, England in 1920, and their impact on 20th century ceramics cannot be overstated. Leach’s conception of the artist-potter and his advocacy for studio pottery in England came at a time when industrially-produced ceramics were dominant. His role in communicating Eastern ceramic tradition to the West, had a ripple effect on the global history of contemporary studio ceramics. The utilitarian cups, or yunomi, featured in this exhibition speak to Leach’s ideology and outlook. This international exhibition is organized in consultation with former Leach apprentice, Jeff Oestreich, who worked at the pottery from 1969-1971.

Here/Now: Contemporary Narrative and Form in the Yunomi is a ceramic cup invitational, which will consist of a small group of ceramic artists asked to construct a series of yunomi. The cylinder, being the root structure of most ceramic objects, leads to the yunomi, which can be playful and quickly made. The yunomi is a foundational form for most makers-inviting many options, directions, and intent. These are a range of contemporary vessel makers who are dedicated to rethinking traditional ideas. Using the cup as a launching point, this exhibition explores the historical ideal of the humble, anonymous Japanese potter juxtaposed with the American idealism of self-experience.

AMOCAFeminizing Brutalism: Ruby Neri and Her Giant Vessels

Alyson Brandes is a graduate of Chapman University and a 2020 Getty Marrow Undergraduate Intern at AMOCA. During her internship, Brandes writes periodically for AMOCA.org, and posts on Instagram and Facebook on Tuesdays.

“As part of my internship, an ongoing project that I’ve been working on involves researching artists for a future exhibition on women working with ceramics in California.”

In her second blog, Feminizing Brutalism: Ruby Neri and Her Giant Vessels, Brandes discusses how her research into Neri led her to question her concepts of masculine and feminine art.and how interest in the 1970s Chicano artist collective Asco and how it helped chart her path to the ceramic arts.

In a review of Neri’s 2019 show at the David Kordansky Gallery, Leah Ollman from the L.A. Times described Neri’s work as closing the gender gap in large ceramic sculpture by using a sense of machisma, in opposition to the male-gendered machismo. This description resonated with me as someone who is fairly new to researching ceramic’s history. In the 1950s and 60s, leading ceramic artists such as Viola Frey and Nancy Selvin were breaking away from the studio potter tradition started by the previous generation of California ceramicists. At the same time, Peter Voulkos and his peers were creating large brutalist works that critics tied to masculinity. Neri’s oversized works challenge the notion that large scale work is tied to masculinity, while also leading the current generation of women artists, many of whom are now using their work to discuss important themes of identity and politics.

Making In Between: Contemporary Chinese American Ceramics

On View: March 14–August 23, 2020

Making in Between - AMOCAMaking In Between: Contemporary Chinese American Ceramics examines the works of six first- and second-generation Chinese American ceramic artists from the United States and provides a basis for dialog and inter-cultural exchange during an era fraught with international tensions.

Southern California has significant Chinese-American heritage and is home to the third-largest community in the United States of Americans with Chinese ancestry. Through cultural, geographic, and historic lenses, the exhibition invites visitors to explore and engage with the contemporary Chinese American artistic experience.

Please let us know of sites and articles you have found helpful that NCECA might share in the days and weeks ahead.
