I am completely fascinated by the systems that operate in the world around us. As humans we have found ways to dissect, manipulate and create multitudes of new systems with both positive and negative outcomes. For the purpose of my work a system is a set of interacting or interdependent components forming an integrated whole. Systems have parts that are interconnected by structural or behavioral relationships that transform inputs and outputs. Systems are an endless source of interesting fodder for my mental consumption!
The intention of my work is to deconstruct and recombine elements found in systems that are both obvious and obscure. By doing this I can create new relationships and narratives that may illuminate issues in our society and the world around us. The work may also, perhaps, highlight the beauty that is present in complicated interactions.
By working predominantly in ceramics I am incorporating information that is inherent in the material to allow for layers of meaning and interpretations. Because the ceramic medium has such an integral role in human history it facilitates a translation of ideas that is rich, varied and multifaceted.
Although I work mostly with porcelain, I enjoy the interaction between mediums, often using different clay bodies and materials to enhance and complicate the work. A unique, thought provoking marriage of meaning and materials is always my desired outcome.
