Narrative

I am a reformed modern dancer and ceramic artist who moonlights as a yoga teacher. Clay and yoga share the necessity of exploring space in combination with our infinite ability to make gestures. As if by a gentle stroke of magic, each discipline transforms the ordinary (clay and body) into the extraordinary (vividly colored stony forms and limber consciousness). Whether it's making a drawing of a line or shape or articulating a direction in space, the quality of the movement that creates the mark, form or gesture is what informs my work most.

My current ceramic work is an exploration of space, both in time and place. Urban and wild environments, their pathways and the light glinting off them play an important role in the concept of my abstract pieces. I think of the overall designs as constructions of vectors, building up in three dimensions or laying flat in two. My work is a place in motion and a place to move within.

Conversely, new work takes me on a journey of time travel. Anonymous photographs haunt my imagination and form the backbone of paper thin porcelain pieces. When something as temporal as paper is recast as a thin sheet of clay, it takes on the perception of permanence. But slip and it will shatter into splinters of cold, sharp dust.

Teaching yoga rounds out my professional life with public classes in Jackson and Mokelumne Hill, CA along with a small private practice for students interested in individual care and attention. I am currently working toward an advanced teacher certification with a focus on alignment and sensible body health.
