I consider myself a student of clay, always learning something more, pushing up against the limits of my ability and the boundaries of my chosen medium. I'm driven by curiosity about clay, asking the question: can you do this? And then seeing what the answer may be. It’s not an easy, predictable path. My relationship with clay is filled with surprises, gratitude when I succeed with a piece and disappointment when I don’t. That is simply the nature of clay, and I’ve learned to be resilient in the face of my capricious medium, as well as in the rest of my life.
I believe beauty is essential to meaningful human existence, and it is my job to deliver a jolt of beauty to people who are open to it. Beauty is not for special occasions or for special people. It is for everyone, for everyday events and rituals. I give everything I possibly can to clay, and in return it allows me to deliver a simple message about the importance of beauty and function.
