NEWLETTER July 2020

ACGA July Newsletter 2020

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Without the shows and deadlines to bracket my daily life, it’s pretty easy to get lost in days of clay and pots, and that is an OK place to be. That they demand so much tending is a good thing. Their needs keep me grounded, and even though it, vertical, seems as though I rarely know what the actual day of the week is, the pots provide a different knowledge and rhythm that soothes. Time passes quite differently listening mostly to them.

And then, there is the garden.  Had those tomatoes not grown so tall and the peas not finished bearing, I might not believe that July is really here. Daily excursions to water, tend and harvest offer additional confirmation of the passage of time as well as the promise that this pandemic will pass. The trick for me is to incorporate some of the lessons from this time into life going forward, whatever that will look like.

But for now, it feels like life is less defined by the external world. The pace of the drying pots and the growing vegetables appear to rule the roost, and that’s OK with me.

Despite these musings, there are realities in this potter’s life that burst in like California fog. I chose to invest energy into online sales and as a result, I get to wear new hats; photographer, up-loader and shipping manager, to name a few.  It’s fun and different, but the truth is, I miss our events, I miss seeing customers face to face. Nothing beats that connection!

So, next best thing….Customers and artist alike, read below about the new 10 Days of ACGA…online!  Please support craft and the creative spirit….check it out, it will debut August 1st

10 Days of ACGA Online

10 DAYS OF ACGA…Online!

August 1 – 10, 2020

Dear ACGA Artists,

Woo Hoo! We have a name and dates!

In this email you will find the link to submit your form and payment to be part of this new fun event. Please you MUST submit it by the deadline of July 7.

Remember, you do not need to have an Etsy or other shop to participate. For those of you who might want to or are in the process of setting something up, remember all we need now from you is the URL. You have till opening day to finish setting it up. Also, your URL might be your Facebook or Instagram … It can be all 3. Minimally it can be your phone or email. The point is to offer customers a way to contact and buy your things.

Your image needs to be 500 KB or smaller. I know that resizing can be hard for some … me included. Please, if you need help, I am going to suggest that you google it. Input all details pertinent to your situation. For me, it might look like ‘ How to resize an image on a Mac in Photos” . Change and save your image before you begin the form. Vertical is best.

You will notice the donation section. I actually think that this is pretty cool as it gives customers a bit of info about us. it makes it more personal, and that is a good thing.

The next email will include a banner to use in advertising and your emails and other postings. It will also discuss the importance of us all putting in effort to make this happen. I will not know what kind of advertising budget we will have to work with till the final numbers are in. This will work if we ALL post to social media … more on that next time.

For now…. GET THIS FORM SUBMITTED! Here is the link…https://form.jotform.com/201797765608166

CERF+ Announces Launch of COVID-19 Relief Grant Program for Artists
CERF+ — the Artists Safety Net is pleased to announce the launch of a COVID-19 Relief Grant program to provide financial assistance to artists working in craft disciplines who are facing dire circumstances from the COVID-19 crisis.
As part of CERF+’s broader COVID-19 crisis response strategies, this special program will provide one-time $1,000 grants to meet urgent food, housing, and/or health insecurities. The grants will be awarded in two cycles: the deadline for the first round will be July 29, and the second will be September 9. Priority will be given to eligible artists who have traditionally been underserved by the grantmaking community including people of color and folk and traditional artists.
“CERF+ recognizes that artists, who are so vital to the health of our communities, have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic with the sudden loss of income because of canceled shows, residencies, exhibitions, teaching opportunities, and other income-generating activities,” notes CERF+ Executive Director, Cornelia Carey. “We acknowledge that this is a small program relative to the significant need, and we look forward to rolling out additional programs to assist with recovery.”

He has experimented widely in this realm, taught hundreds of workshops all around the world, and written two books on the subject: Wild Fermentation and The Art of Fermentation.

What are your thoughts on the relationship between craft and food? Everything about food involves craft and technique, from growing it to harvesting it and storing it correctly, to milling, sprouting, fermenting, cooking, and all the other processes that transform the raw products of agriculture into all the things we love to eat and drink. Read more.

“My work empowering people with fermentation skills is motivated by my desire to see more people get their hands into food crafting.”

Up-cycling is the process of turning waste, often of the sort that is usually considered “un-recyclable”, into something that is useful or of value. A popular form of up-cycling involves creating art with items of waste, and the results can be spectacular!

LOS ANGELES – Craft in America

Here Now - A Humble LegacyHere/Now | A Humble Legacy: Two Exhibitions of Yunomi
7/18/2020 – 9/19/2020
https://www.craftinamerica.org/exhibition/here-now-a-humble-legacy-two-exhibitions-of-yunomi
Upon the centennial of the founding of Leach Pottery, the Craft in America Center is pleased to present two exhibitions celebrating the cup as object and the impact of Bernard Leach on studio ceramics.

A Humble Legacy is an exhibition of approximately two dozen works of historic and contemporary cups made by a selection of artists affiliated with Leach Pottery and others who continue in its legacy. Master potters Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada established St. Ives Pottery (Leach Pottery) in Cornwall, England in 1920, and their impact on 20th century ceramics cannot be overstated. Leach’s conception of the artist-potter and his advocacy for studio pottery in England came at a time when industrially-produced ceramics were dominant. His role in communicating Eastern ceramic tradition to the West, had a ripple effect on the global history of contemporary studio ceramics. The utilitarian cups, or yunomi, featured in this exhibition speak to Leach’s ideology and outlook. This international exhibition is organized in consultation with former Leach apprentice, Jeff Oestreich, who worked at the pottery from 1969-1971.

Here/Now: Contemporary Narrative and Form in the Yunomi is a ceramic cup invitational, which will consist of a small group of ceramic artists asked to construct a series of yunomi. The cylinder, being the root structure of most ceramic objects, leads to the yunomi, which can be playful and quickly made. The yunomi is a foundational form for most makers-inviting many options, directions, and intent. These are a range of contemporary vessel makers who are dedicated to rethinking traditional ideas. Using the cup as a launching point, this exhibition explores the historical ideal of the humble, anonymous Japanese potter juxtaposed with the American idealism of self-experience.

Res Artis –

Encounter the World in Residencies.
Explore the listings here: www.resartis.org/en/
Arts residencies are at a global standstill. By our very nature of facilitating quality international and national arts and cultural exchange, the field of arts residencies is one of the hardest hit.

Res Artis: Worldwide Network of Arts Residencies is partnering with UCL (University College London) to conduct this survey to assess the true impact of COVID-19 specifically on the arts residencies field. This survey first examines the immediate impact; and then we will ask respondents to complete two further short surveys to analyse the medium-term; and long-term effects.

You don’t need to be a Res Artis Member or affiliated to UCL to complete this survey. We urge all artists and arts residency organisations around the globe to complete this form so that Res Artis in partnership with UCL can advocate for support, much-needed resources and emergency funding on behalf of the sector. It will help us all, as a collective whole, gain a deeper understanding of the situation and how we might work together to rebuild and strengthen the field.

The survey below should take approximately 10 minutes of your time, but the results will be long-lasting. Thank you for contributing to this important research and data collection.
