CERF+
A huge thank you to the more than 50 members who donated their work to CERF+ to be sold at the CERF+ Booth at the Festival. This was one of the best benefits we have ever had, and raised over $2500 for the CA fund of CERF+. Besides the sale of your donated work, the booth helped spread the word about the amazing work CERF+ is doing and encouraged some donations of money as well.

California’s ceramics embody many cultures and traditions, but they also convey a certain freedom & edginess. ACGA is pleased to announce “Seismic State: Ceramics of California”, selected by NCECA as a Venue-Originated Exhibition during its 2022 conference in Sacramento. This show will celebrate sculptural & functional work by artists living & working in the state today. Juror Beth Ann Gerstein’s selections will join pieces by invited artists Ashwini Bhat, Keiko Fukazawa, Ben Medansky, Crystal Morey, Kristen Morgin, Adam Shiverdecker, Cheryl Ann Thomas, Kim Tucker, & Wanxin Zhang.

The exhibition is sponsored by the Association of Clay & Glass Artists of California (ACGA) and hosted by Sparrow Gallery in downtown Sacramento, within walking distance of the NCECA conference. As a Venue-Originated Exhibition, it will be promoted in conference materials as well as printed postcards, social media, and emails from ACGA and Sparrow Gallery.

Juror Beth Ann Gerstein joined AMOCA as Executive Director in 2014, following a twenty-year tenure as Executive Director for The Society of Arts and Crafts in Boston, Massachusetts. She currently serves on the board of Watershed Center for Ceramic Arts in Maine. Gerstein is a former member of the Collections Committee of the Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA, former board member of the Glass Art Society, and served on the Lifetime Achievement Committee for the Society of North American Goldsmiths.

Gerstein holds an MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art and a BFA from Edinboro University.

Berkeley Potters Guild Celebrates 50 Years

After Thousands of Pots and Tons of Clay, the Berkeley Potters Guild Celebrates 50 Years.

Twenty-one years ago, in the Spring of 2000, a notice appeared on the bulletin board in the entrance to the Berkeley Potters Guild informing its eighteen members the building was for sale. We all knew this might happen someday. Nonetheless, when I walked into our building and read the sign, I stood there in shock. Eighteen potters might soon be scrambling for new places to work.

The owners, called Clayshares, consisted of the original potters who first rented the space in 1971 and others who bought shares along the way. Clayshares had kept rents affordable for nearly 30 years, a rarity for workspace in Berkeley. Now reaching retirement age, they were ready to cash out. They offered the Guild first option to buy, with a discounted asking price, but even that was beyond the means of most of us.
Moments after I had read our building was for sale, a friend rang the doorbell. Pivoting quickly, I welcomed him in and showed him the sign. “You won’t believe this!” Rich exclaimed. “I just had a conversation with a neighbor who wants to buy a building for artists in Berkeley!” His neighbor had recently adopted two children and wanted this purchase to be an investment for them. Rich’s neighbor came to see the building the next day, and as I watched her, wide-eyed while she toured the large space with its warren of working studios and multiple kilns, I knew I had met our new landlady. By the Fall, it was a done deal. We had a 25-year lease.

In buying the building, the new owner rescued the oldest continuously operating ceramic studio in Berkeley. And we got a dream landlady, her kindness and generosity cannot be overstated. She not only has given us a 25-year lease, but she has also taken good care of the building and has never interfered with our operation. During the pandemic, she gave everyone a month’s free rent. She enabled the Berkeley Potters Guild to reach its 50th Anniversary!

The Guild was born in the 1970’s, on the heels of a world-wide cultural revolution of which California, and Berkeley in particular, was a major center. It was a heady, creatively explosive time. Young people were coming together from all over the country to make art and make a living by selling their work. A few of these artists were potters in Berkeley who worked in a building that became condemned. They found a new home in an 8,000 square-foot barren warehouse in West Berkeley and signed a five-year lease. In their first year they built all of the inside walls, including three lofts, and carved out 18 individual studio spaces, all still standing today. They built six natural-gas kilns for high-temperature firing and managed to hold a very successful sale (even by today’s standards) at the end of the year. After renewing the lease for another five years, they bought the building, and went on to create one of the most successful working spaces for ceramic artists in the Bay Area.

Many people have worked at the Guild over the last 50 years. While potters have come and gone, the Guild has survived, mainly because of the structure of the organization. The Guild provides a place for ceramicists – both skilled professionals and developing artists – to work independently. Each member runs and owns their own business, and each owns their own equipment. They come together to hold two well-attended sales a year – a two-week Spring Sale and a four-week Holiday Sale. They also participate together in annual community events such as the East Bay Open Studios and Berkeley Artisans Holiday Open Studios.

Another factor for the Guild’s longevity is that Guild members are all voting board members with equal say in Guild matters. Their excellent bylaws, which have not changed much, have been indispensable in resolving issues over the years. Also, the Guild never had to relocate, something that most certainly would have dispersed its members.

The Guild not only provides workspace for its members; it provides community. It is a place of acceptance and encouragement. Members are colleagues who support each other’s creative and professional development. Most members are professionals who make their living with clay; others are learning their craft. As one member said when she arrived, she was not a developed artist; the Guild provided a place where she could grow technically and artistically.

People come and go, but the Guild is stable both as a place to work and as a fixture of the Berkeley art community. It has enjoyed the wonderful support of loyal customers from the Bay Area and beyond. Its semi-annual sales are successful and well attended. Customers love to roam the building through the maze of studios, making b-lines to their favorite artists and also discovering new ones. During the rest of the year, guests visit the Guild’s beautiful gallery, open Saturdays, staffed by members. Their work has been highly regarded throughout the years and shown in fine galleries locally: the Asian Art Museum, the DeYoung Museum, and the Oakland Museum, as well as nationally and internationally.

Another feature of the Guild’s longevity is its ability to adapt to change. With changing membership, studios have been reconfigured, spaces have been combined or divided. Huge gas kilns have been moved around the building. Styles of work have changed as well. From the popular high-fire functional stoneware of the early days, members now also produce fine porcelain and brightly decorated mid-fired ceramics. This means a predominance of electric kilns over gas. There is a fabulous variety of styles and function: from traditional to contemporary, tableware to sculpture, large and small; functional vases and decorative wall pieces; whimsical figures and unique ceramic jewelry. Some work in mixed media, combining clay and fiber. In recent years, one member has branched into working with slumped glass, another has chosen to explore intricate textile work.

The Berkeley Potters Guild has been self-sustaining for 50 years. It has never received grants or subsidies. It has hosted workshops and a ceramic conference featuring renowned potters such as Gary Coleman, Robin Hopper, Chris Gustin, Lana Wilson and Sam Chung, with attendees from across the country.

The Guild has had a profound impact on the Berkeley art scene. Several founding members built private studios within blocks of the building. Our large sales draw art lovers to the area. Over the years, other art groups and private studios have gravitated to the neighborhood. Now, West Berkeley has officially been identified with colorful city banners as “West Berkeley Artisans District”.
The Berkeley Potters Guild survived the pandemic, with lines around the block waiting to enter the 2020 Holiday Show and Spring Seconds Sale. Rejoicing in the celebration of fifty years working in clay, providing a workspace that can accommodate 20 potters, hosting sales and workshops, a weekend Gallery, offering fine ceramics to the greater community.

Linda Mau

In October ACGA lost longtime member Linda Mau to pancreatic cancer. Linda was an emeritus member having joined ACGA in 1980. She was an artist of great skill and a beloved teacher, mentor and friend to many members of ACGA and Orchard Valley Ceramic Arts Guild (OVCAG) as well as numerous ceramic artists in the greater Bay Area. She participated in Clay and Glass for many years and helped with exhibitions, including
ACGA at the Olive Hyde Gallery in Fremont, CA. She pioneered vessel and sculptural forms made of paper clay formed and fired on a metal mesh
armature. She also made beautiful, bold forms in clay using soft slabs supported by tar paper. Linda taught at De Anza College in Cupertino
and more recently at Higher Fire in San Jose. Over the years she was an active and frequent workshop presenter for OVCAG.

The following tribute from Bill Geisinger speaks to Linda’s gifts as a teacher and mentor.

“Linda Mau taught at De Anza College as an adjunct professor in ceramics for almost twenty years. She was generally scheduled to teach beginning
and intermediate wheel throwing. The fundamental skills that most students needed to learn. Linda was a gentle and encouraging master
potter. She required students to achieve one skill before moving on to the next level. She encouraged students to be individuals but at the
same time help and share with others. It is this precisely that made Linda a popular and loved teacher. Her students liked the challenges
they were assigned and the responsibility to share their own knowledge or skill.

Linda Mau we miss your energetic attitude and thank you for sharing with us at De Anza College.”

Linda leaves behind her spouse Rich whom she always referred to as her “best friend” and one brother. She also leaves behind a magnificent
body of work and the fond memories of the many potters whose lives she touched.

After the Gold Rush

2021 Show Schedule
Hi Everyone, We were hoping we wouldn’t have to write this notice – AGAIN! – but we’ve just received word from the Pleasant Hill Chamber that they’ve had to cancel the 2021 Art, Wine & Music Festival. After meetings with the County re health protocols for summer events, the County wants vaccine cards, current negative covid test results, thermometer checks, etc., and controlling of the attendees with regards to numbers, distancing, etc. Even a fenced-in event (how DO you fence in an entire downtown area anyway??) would be prohibitive in cost let alone a nightmare to enforce. And no one wants to ‘enforce’ anything at what should be a fun, happy outing. Contra Costa County seems to be one of the most strict in CA when it comes to holding outside events (see the new CDC guidelines below.)

The Chamber has asked us to send their sincere apologies to all for any inconvenience, and hope to hold the 2022 show with no restrictions from the County (Covid!!!) Dates will be October 8 & 9, 2022.

We still have spaces available in the Sept. 4 & 5, 2021 Arnold shows now. Please send in your applications if you want to do the show, even if you have to post-date a check for the entry fee (up to August 1).

With regard to the ‘Gifts ‘n Tyme Holiday Faire’ in Napa on Nov. 19 – 21, 2021, We should be at ‘herd immunity’ by late summer and the show is still over 6 months away, and we would expect even more relaxed guidelines when that goal is reached. See www.cdc.gov for the latest updates. Please continue to send in your applications – without entry fees – if you’re interested in doing the show. As well as knowing that the public will be confident enough to attend inside gatherings by November, we need to know that there are enough confident vendors that wish to do it as well.

President’s Message

It is with an enormous amount of joy that I, and the entire ACGA community, celebrate the return of The Clay and Glass Festival. We are grateful to the Palo Alto Art Center for continuing to provide the lovely venue where we can safely be outdoors and share our work with the public. It has, and continues to be, a challenging time, but I believe that the power of creativity and beauty help mitigate the trying times and enrich our lives. We look forward to seeing many of you on September 11 and 12.

As a volunteer organization, ACGA relies on its’ members to make things happen. I would Like to acknowledge the long-time serving board members for their continuing efforts on behalf of us all. Jan, Lee, April, and Bonita, thank you for your long-time service. Sally, Emil, Joe, Trudy, thank you as well, your continued support is appreciated! “I am emailing to let you know about an international conference coming up this month that I feel confident you will want to know about, register for and inform your professional community about.

It will mark the 49th Congress of the International Academy of Ceramics (IAC), in collaboration with the Arctic Ceramics Center (ACC), and will take place online on September 22 and 23, 2021.

The Theme: “On the Edge” reflects not only the location of the Congress (Lapland) but the pulse of our time as we emerge from the global pandemic.

The program of this two-day virtual meeting includes international speakers, national and international exhibitions, presentations by IAC members on current issues that effect our time and opportunities for interactive discussions. The conference hopes to develop critical positions as it moves into a post Covid world and provides a framework for these primary topics of exploration: Signals from the Future, Social and Political Realities, Locality and Materiality and Making and Wellbeing.

“On the Edge” is particularly significant as it provides an opportunity to re-imagine, rethink and restart a dialog that addresses both mainstream and margins within ceramic art, design and crafts. We will bring together communities of artists, researchers, collectors, curators, writers, historians, and gallerists in a unique forum.

Claudia Tarantino Workshop

Description: Claudia Tarantino works with porcelain to create trompe l’oeil sculpture. Her works are comprised of multiple objects assembled into a narrative still life. In her workshop Claudia will demonstrate her handbuilding techniques with an emphasis on detail in forming, underglazing and china paint application. She will also discuss the aesthetics of composition and the adhesives used in the final assembly of the work.

Claudia is a two-time recipient of Marin Arts Council Individual Artist Grants and she exhibits nationally and is in numerous private collections and museums. She and her husband, Bill Abright, maintain a studio together in San Anselmo, CA.

A Workshop was taught by Lynn Wood at the Mendocino Art Center.

This workshop was about enhancing one’s hand-built work by combining a number of surface techniques using textures, colored slips, and underglazes. The techniques that were covered include slip trailing, using commercial and DIY stencils, DIY underglaze transfers, mono printing, underglaze inlay and more…adding some color techniques into the surface toolbox.

In September, I’ll be bringing two of my sculptures for the Honoring, an Attleboro Arts Museum Invitational Exhibition Inspired by Joy Harjo’s An American Sunrise poem.
I dedicated both of my sculptures to the nurses. “How much can you take?” draws on the idea of bodily knowledge of how to heal oneself.

Another piece has found a new home in Manchester, New Hampshire. It was shown for less than a month at the Seacoast Artist Association Gallery.

Bede Clarke has been a Professor of Art at the University of Missouri since 1992. He received his Master of Fine Arts from The University of Iowa (1990) and a BFA from Eckerd College (1982). Bede’s work is found in public and private collections in the U.S. and abroad.

The soul of a pot, its “being,” is born in the hands of the potter and grows through the relationship you create with it: the ritual of pouring hot water into a teapot, the intention behind placing flowers in your beloved vase, the simple pleasure of a beautiful, functional object.

Marvin Lipofsky: International Studio Glass
International Terminal – Departures – Level 3

August 10, 2021 – September 25, 2022

Marvin Lipofsky (1938–2016) was a founding member of the American studio glass movement. Throughout his career, Lipofsky explored the limits of form and color in glass and helped to elevate the medium to a fine art. Lipofsky’s most prolific period featured glass sculpture that was initiated in a collaborative setting, such as a factory or workshop, and then finished in his home studio in Berkeley, California. Whether it was created stateside or in a foreign country, each sculptural series is unique and reflects the culture and environment in which it was made.

Lipofsky was an innovative force in the early years of experimentation with studio glass. He studied with Harvey Littleton and his first group of glassblowing students at the University of Wisconsin and received MFA and MS degrees in Sculpture in 1964. Later that year, Lipofsky founded a studio glass program at the University of California, Berkeley, followed by another program in 1967 at the California College of Arts and Crafts (now the California College of the Arts) in Oakland. Lipofsky invited glassmakers from across the country and around the world to lecture and demonstrate at both schools, beginning in 1968 when he inaugurated the annual Great California Glass Symposium to bring artists and students even closer together.

During the 1970s, Lipofsky refined his formula for creating collaborative glass sculpture. The first stage was fast-paced and involved a number of glassmakers working in concert with one another over a handful of days. Multiple layers of clear and colored glass were heated in a furnace and rolled onto the end of a blowpipe. Once the hot glass was blown into a suitable bubble, it was placed into a mold to form its initial shape. Upon return to his Berkeley studio, Lipofsky shifted to a more reflective and contemplative approach. He spent countless hours with a diamond saw, pneumatic grinder, belt sander, and sandblasting cabinet, sculpting his blown glass forms into lively and organic expressions of studio craft.

For close to five decades, Lipofsky worked in glass factories and workshops in more than twenty-five countries on five different continents, earning him the title of the “roving ambassador of glass.” A master of adapting to different cultures, he excelled at transcending language barriers and making efficient use of the resources at hand. Discarded molds, surplus glass, and the experience of his colleagues all lent a distinct character to each of his collaborative series. With great respect for glassmakers and their unique environments, Lipofsky consistently followed the path of local talent and molten glass to stunning and surprising outcomes.

2021 Show Schedule
Hi Everyone, We were hoping we wouldn’t have to write this notice – AGAIN! – but we’ve just received word from the Pleasant Hill Chamber that they’ve had to cancel the 2021 Art, Wine & Music Festival. After meetings with the County re health protocols for summer events, the County wants vaccine cards, current negative covid test results, thermometer checks, etc., and controlling of the attendees with regards to numbers, distancing, etc. Even a fenced-in event (how DO you fence in an entire downtown area anyway??) would be prohibitive in cost let alone a nightmare to enforce. And no one wants to ‘enforce’ anything at what should be a fun, happy outing. Contra Costa County seems to be one of the most strict in CA when it comes to holding outside events (see the new CDC guidelines below.)

The Chamber has asked us to send their sincere apologies to all for any inconvenience, and hope to hold the 2022 show with no restrictions from the County (Covid!!!) Dates will be October 8 & 9, 2022.

We still have spaces available in the Sept. 4 & 5, 2021 Arnold shows now. Please send in your applications if you want to do the show, even if you have to post-date a check for the entry fee (up to August 1).

With regard to the ‘Gifts ‘n Tyme Holiday Faire’ in Napa on Nov. 19 – 21, 2021, We should be at ‘herd immunity’ by late summer and the show is still over 6 months away, and we would expect even more relaxed guidelines when that goal is reached. See www.cdc.gov for the latest updates. Please continue to send in your applications – without entry fees – if you’re interested in doing the show. As well as knowing that the public will be confident enough to attend inside gatherings by November, we need to know that there are enough confident vendors that wish to do it as well.

We’ll be issuing refunds this week to anyone that’s already been accepted into the Pleasant Hill show. President’s Message

It is an exciting time for ACGA. Once again, we will be able to gather in Palo Alto for the 28th annual Clay and Class Show, this year, happening in September. The relative isolation many artists feel was compounded this past 17 months for many of us, and it will be great to be together again. I have heard so many tales of these Covid times offering artists an opportunity to dig deep and explore. I know that here at Nichibei, my husband and I have discovered new glazes, shapes and even new ways to run our business; a silver lining for sure.

Another jury for artists to become festival eligible will happen before the Show, and the deadline for submissions is July 10. Please encourage other Clay and glass artists you might know whose work you think is of quality to apply. Growing the clay and glass community here in California is a goal of ACGA as we strive to become an organization that is more accessible and relevant. Especially younger artists who may be at the beginning of their artist journey, we want ACGA to be a partner in your growth. So as summer settles in and the days grow warmer, I can’t help but look back as well as forward. I’m reminded to be grateful for so much, and to send healing compassion to those who are hurting. I will miss those who have passed on and yet am comforted in knowing that their artistic creations, and hence spirits, endure.

“My Water Drop Series emerged as a metaphor for life and environment. It symbolizes the importance water plays in our lives and our environment. California, where I live, has been suffering from severe drought for the past several years. I was inspired by the striking blue sky and breathtaking clouds that I saw after a rainstorm in early spring. Without water, the environment depicted in “Verdant” could not exist.”

Jane gave an Artist Talk , June 5th, at Epperson Gallery, “Flow”.

In positive psychology, a flow state, also know colloquially as being in the zone, is the mental state in which a person performing some activity is fully immersed in a feeling of energized focus, full involvement, and enjoyment in the process of the activity.

“Creativity always has been part of my like. I was born into a family of architects and artists. However, I did not seriously focus on making art until I was in college where one third of my course load was sculpture. I have been experimenting with materials, styles, and content ever since. I began by having a jewelry business in NYC in the 60’s making jewelry that could be considered small scale sculptures. In the 80’s, having tired of running a business, I decided to use clay as my material of choice. There are few limitations in creating sculptures in clay. Texture and color and surface treatment options are limitless. Most of my work is organic, reminiscent of things in nature, the sea, plant life, microscopic forms. Other sculptures are very structural, architectural, focusing on form.

As I am making one piece, I start questioning how it would look if I just made this one change, or maybe that one change. What if I change the dimensions, the form, the color, the finish…My artistic journey continues.”

Liza Riddle

Liza is one of the featured artists at DZINE Gallery, located in San Francisco. In this new exhibit, One of Many, Liza joins stellar artists Karyn Gabriel and Tanya Hollis, who use similar media and materials, and present art that replicates patterns and natural processes.
As curator Philip Bewley writes: “Material becomes metaphor for time and transformation, for our human identity, our place within a larger community, and for being a witness to the dramatic changes in the world around us.”

The exhibit will be on view from June 18 -August 20, 2021.

Vince Montague

Vince gave an Artist Talk at Epperson gallery, on June 6th.
“The work I make is subjective and personal, based on feeling rather than thought. My earlier ceramics showed my interest with Japanese folk pottery and atmospheric firing, but recently I have wanted to make pots that feel closer to the place where I live and work in Northern California. Before the revolution in technology, people moved to the west coast to pursue their dreams “to find themselves” or to build the type of world they wanted to see. “Back to the Land” wasn’t just a slogan but an actual choice. I feel a
great debt to the many artists, designers, architects, composers, farmers, utopians, iconoclasts and spiritual seekers who settled out here in the 1950s, 60s and 70s, to manifest their own ideals of living peacefully and equitably either alone or in communities. That burst of energy surrounds me every day, and my new work strives to be part of that dream.”

Kim Webster – Member Profile

Kim Webster, a new member, is a glass artist and avid gardener whose subtly lit sculptures tempt people into the garden at night. A graduate of Canada’s Sheridan College School of Craft and Design, Kim has studied glass in many of its forms: blowing, casting, kilnworking and enameling. After a move to California with her filmmaker
husband in 1999, Kim established her glass career with sculptures inspired by the Mediterranean landscape. She has
been commissioned to make installations for Kaiser and John Muir hospitals as well as private homes and gardens
throughout the USA. Her work has twice been selected for the Corning Museum of Glass New Glass Review and in 2019 won the Mayor’s Award for her installation at Oakland’s Autumn Lights Festival, an event she looks forward to every autumn!

Sad News About Bob Poole

Bob Pool, forty years an amazing potter, longtime ACGA member and past ACGA president, died suddenly in his Berkeley home on May 31, 2021. He had been battling cancer for the last three years but was doing extremely well, Bob had started back working in the studio. His death was a shock as he was feeling well, looking very fit, and in very good humor. He had just spent a day working with his grandkids in the studio. Bob was planning to visit Korea in November to meet with the international group of potters he had been working with for the last 15 years.

Bob was of the fifth generation of Pools born in San Francisco (1946) and was raised in Marin County, mainly in Fairfax. He graduated from Drake High School in San Anselmo. His original career was in Marine Biology (A.B. from University of California, Berkeley, PHD. from University of California Los Angeles.) In 1982 he took a pottery class. Bob fell in love with making pots and left his work in science to become a studio potter.

His love and knowledge of the natural world, particularly the ocean, was reflected in his forms and glazes. He also took inspiration from Asian and African fabrics. In his last years of work, he was deeply influenced by working with his dear friends in Asia, and with potters from around the world. He was a founding member of the International Ceramic Artist Association, Zibo, China. Bob was studying Korean so he could better communicate with his Korean colleagues. Bob was an expert potter and his wares were light and masterfully decorated. He was most well-known for his glaze on glaze decoration applied with pattern carved sponges and his stamped and inlayed vessels inspired from the Korean tradition. He immersed himself in Asian culture, tradition and art. Bob especially loved the ceramics and cuisine of Korea. He also had a passion for good high quality coffee and would scour the streets of Asian cities for a great (cappuccino) espresso!

Bob was most generous and giving. He was always sharing his knowledge and passions with those who had the privilege of meeting him. Bob is survived by his wife, Cathy Valdez Pool, his step-sons, Adam and Matthew Valdez, his daughters-inlaw, Julie Valdez and Audrey Ferrara. His six grandchildren were the delight of his life: Hailey, Tobin, Quinn, Utah, Wyatt and Eloise. His brother Michael Pool and his sisters: Mary Lou Webster and Sally Pool all survive him.

His family hopes to have an event in his honor in the near future. Condolences can be sent to Bob’s studio:

Funk was a Northern California art movement based mainly in Davis and Berkeley throughout the 60s and 70s. This movement exaggerated and elevated the medium of ceramics, often using political or autobiographical subjects. In response to the cool, detached minimalism in New York, Funk art made use use of bright colors, lewd humor, and bizarre narratives. This zany new approach to art brought a group of people together in the early 1960s that would become well-known funk artists in the coming years. The early days at UC Davis where funk art flourished were made possible by pioneers like Robert Arneson, Roy De Forest, William T. Wiley as well as like-minded individuals in the Bay Area like Peter Saul and Clayton Bailey. Starting in the mid 1950s, Pop art also challenged traditions of fine art by including imagery from pop culture such as ads, comics, and mundane mass-produced objects. One of the aims of Pop art is to use images of popular (as opposed to elitist) culture in art, emphasizing the banal or kitschy elements of any culture, most often through the use of irony. Some of the pioneers and leaders in this movement were Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, and Jasper Johns. Although some Funk artists continued to make art for many decades, the movement itself ended in the late 70s. Meanwhile, Pop art became a much larger movement that
continues to this day.

Stoneware Stories- Folk Pottery of Edgefield, South Carolina

The Deep South has a unique place in the history of American ceramics. In the Northeast, potters commonly used salt to glaze stoneware in the European tradition. But in the southern United States, where salt was a more precious commodity, potters often applied alkaline glazes on high-fired stoneware. Pottery ranges in color from pale green to dark brown with glazed surfaces that vary from smooth and glassy, to drippy and textured. The technique originated in Han
Dynasty, China (206BCE–220CE) and was pioneered in the United States by South Carolina physician and newspaper editor Dr. Abner Landrum (1785–1859), who most likely studied published accounts of Chinese alkaline glaze formulas. Landrum established the Pottersville Stoneware Manufactory around 1815 in the
Edgefield District, the west-central area of the state that is rich in kaolin clay deposits and the alkaline ingredients—wood ashes or lime—required to melt the additional glaze elements.

Traditionally, Southern potteries were small, family-owned seasonal operations, consisting of farmers who sold their wares locally to supplement their incomes. In contrast, Edgefield’s potteries were ambitious enterprises. By 1850, numerous entrepreneurs and investors had opened factories to fulfill the demand for stoneware required for food storage and preservation in the agriculturally rich region. Manufacturers shipped pottery via railway to planters and merchants throughout the state. They placed newspaper advertisements, hired journeymen potters, and applied makers’ marks. Enslaved laborers and, later, freed African Americans, engaged in all aspects of Edgefield stoneware production, from digging and mixing clay to loading wood-fueled kilns, and peddling wares. Others served as “turners” or potters, producing exceptional examples of Edgefield stoneware.

President’s Message

The degree to which this spring feels like a true awakening cannot be understated. The contents of this newsletter alone mirror the reopening of our precious world, offering so many opportunities to reconnect and explore anew again.

The dormancy of the past year presented us with great challenges as well as opportunities. We know things now that we did not before, including an entirely new vocabulary, Zoom, PPE, flatten the curve, PPP, a Pod, and the saddest of all, social distancing. We were all forced, on some level, to rediscover resiliency. I believe we grew, if even just a bit, despite the many sadnesses. Seeing this growth in so many of my friends, family and fellow artists has been wonderful. I have experienced it myself as I dove more fully unto my work than ever before in my life, and did so without the constant deadlines of wholesale orders and shows. It felt great!

So, as we cautiously step forward, re-entering and returning to that which we once took for granted, my hope is that we hold onto the quiet that this period has offered and learn to be more conscious, compassionate and creative. Wishing you all a peaceful spring.

ACGA SEPTEMBER SALE

The Festival Committee is excited to announce that the Clay & Glass Sale will be happening on Sept. 11-12, 2021!
Giant Creative and the Palo Alto Art Center are on board, and we are starting to work out the details.

Important Points:
• We expect a great show after missing 2020, but this year will not be like other years. Please modify your expectations, and find the silver lining in the changes that are needed to make this event viable.

• Due to COVID-19 uncertainties, we have simplified the event. We all need to be prepared to be flexible as California reopens this summer, things could change by September.

• We will all be adhering to the city and county guidelines for safe outdoor retail sales.

• For now, we have to call it the ACGA Clay & Glass Sale (county regulations). The booth fee is $260 plus 15% of sales (cap at $7,000 remains in place)
• Most important – please be kind, gentle and respectful with our partners at Giant Creative, the Art Center, the committee members and each other.

The event application and booth map is being updated and will be emailed soon to all Festival-eligible artists. We hope to hold an online jury in May or June; look for an email with more info about jurying if you are interested in becoming a Festival-eligible artist. If you have ACGA artist friends who do not tend to check their email, please spread the word!

We are so looking forward to the NCECA conference coming to Sacramento in March next year. ACGA has decided to apply for a booth at Gallery Expo at the convention center. Gallery Expo features unique, high-quality works in clay, including functional, decorative, and sculptural.
Eight selected galleries and organizations from across the United States will show and sell at Gallery Expo. We believe that this is an excellent opportunity for ACGA to extend its presence beyond California, promote and support ACGA clay artists, and attract new members.

We will be announcing the Call For Entry very soon. Any CLAY member who is eligible for the Festival may apply to participate in the prospective ACGA booth at Gallery Expo. Artists may also interpret this theme as more narrative, such as objects, individuals, or groups that have been left behind, destroyed, or removed. Artists may also interpret this in relation to the climate crisis since it is during the anniversary of many devastating California wildfires.

ABOUT RADIUS
Radius Gallery is located at the Tannery Arts Center in Santa Cruz, California. The building is historic with exposed trusses, skylights, and concrete floors – great for installation and large sculpture. Radius is located on the ground floor, with 8′ wide doorway and easy to access for delivery and pick up. The main exhibition space is 1600 feet. Gallery hours are Wednesday – Sunday 12-5 and by appointment.
Radius Gallery will handle all exhibition marketing, postcard, labels, and title vinyl. Artist commission is 60% of the sale. Artists are responsible for delivery and pick-up of artwork. ACGA is available to assist with group deliveries.

The BAY AREA CUP SWAP 2021
The Bay Area Cup Swap has connected ceramic artists to one another through generosity and the exchange of mugs since 2009. Organized by artist Erik Scollon, BAC is hosting the 2021 version as part of ‘Origin Stories: Expanded Ceramics in the Bay Area.’ Join us for this free outdoor, socially distanced event on the closing day of the exhibition.

The premise is simple: exchange a cup you made for a chance to connect with someone else through the mug they made.
Ceramic artists, makers, potters, and sculptors of any kind and all levels are encouraged to participate. This event is for everyone, especially self-identified amateurs, hobbyists, “Sunday potters,” and those who work in community centers and neighborhood studios. The event is free but registration is required. All participants must wear face coverings, even if you are vaccinated, and social distancing protocols will be enforced. The gallery will be open to a limited number of walk-up visitors at a time for the final day of the exhibition.

The search for the figure has inspired sculptor Marc Lancet’s artistic practice for decades. Harkening back to ancient goddess figures from prehistoric Europe, Japan and pre-colonial Africa, Lancet builds totemic female figures on a grand scale. Always aiming for wonder and mystery over realism and planning, he produces abstracted figures full of emotional depth. Making Waves: Ocean Ecology & Craft
Craft in America Center is pleased to present a dynamic virtual exhibition of more than fifty mixed media works made by eleven artists from across the U.S. who depict the beauty of our
seas and confront various ecological and human-generated threats.

Making Waves focuses on artworks that celebrate and champion our oceans. These gathered objects shed light on the impact of climate change on the bodies of seawater across the planet, the hazards to life within them, and their vitality to our survival. Along with all that we have the past year, the ongoing and surmounting climate crisis remains one of the largest existential and physical threats to life on Earth. From global warming and rising ocean levels to microplastics, carbon emissions, and overfishing, the issues are numerous and urgent. The group of artists featured in this exhibition use various craft media to reflect the richness of the natural world that exists underwater. They remind us about the need to protect these resources before we are left with nothing more than their artistic likenesses.

“Duck Out” joins “Around and Around,” another sculpture by Ma, in the Crocker’s renowned collection of international ceramics. Through both sculptures, Ma gives form to his experience with social anxiety, a disorder that impacts nearly 15 million American adults who experience a persistent, intense fear of being judged by others.

Planning for the Sacramento NCECA Conference (March 16-19,2022) has begun. I am writing to you in my role as a member of the Advance Planning Committee. As one of the representatives from the Oakland/Berkeley/San Francisco Area, I would like to keep you informed about what’s happening and how you might like to participate.

Although our area is on “the fringes” geographically to the main event and we in no way want to take the focus away from the events that will be happening in Sacramento during the NCECA conference, I am hoping our Bay Area ceramic artists, studios and galleries will want to come up with pre and post conference events. There might be as many as 6,000 attendees to the 2022 NCECA conference and many of them will be traveling through the Bay Area on their way to the conference. Our pre and post conference events could provide a great opportunity to get folks to take a detour off the freeway and get to know our diverse and exciting Bay Area ceramics scene.
There is lots of time for you to start thinking up something special for you and/or your studio/gallery to do…an exciting exhibition, open studio event, tour ???…the possibilities are endless. About 12 months prior to March 2022 I would like to start putting together a map listing your pre and post conference events. I hope to post this information on-line as well as in printed form so that it is readily available well before and during the conference. Other areas in our region are also planning pre and post conference events and we are hoping to get together a coordinated calendar. This is going to be an extremely exciting time here for all things ceramic.

Do you have a dynamite idea for a concurrent show for the conference? The proposals are due in April 2021. These shows are supported by NCECA (which generally means they supply the space and the show will be listed in official NCECA literature). PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

When 2020 was new and freshly hatched, I thought how auspicious it was to be entering a year with the numbers 20/20. Immediately my mind went to vision. I was imagining an opportunity to see things with more clarity, gain insight, a chance to grow. Little did I know!

I think we are all ready to say good-bye to 2020, and yet as I write these words, I realize that 2021 will be a year of uncertainty. For ACGA, we are assessing the viability and timing of a potential Clay and Glass Festival. We are looking at our budget, attempting to project with many unknowns. We are looking to grow and develop additional programs and opportunities for our artists. We do this in the middle of this ongoing pandemic, trusting and believing in better days.

Seldom do I reach out and ask, but I’m going to do it now. Please consider a year-end donation to ACGA. Though not tax deductible due to type of non- profit we are, it is money that will be used wisely to help us all. Kathy’s artwork, “The Artist and Her Art” is in the Epperson National Clay Competition 2020 at the Epperson Gallery of Ceramic Arts in Crockett, CA. The exhibit dates are extended thru Feb. 21. She was at “Meet the Artist” event on December 19th.

“After an exciting career in commercial art designing with many different media, I rediscovered clay, a tactile and intriguing material that has captured my interest ever since. My clay artwork is mostly hand- built, using clay slabs, coils, and extruded components, evoking both the visual and tactile senses. My work ranges in scale from small 3″ coil baskets to large-scale architectural installation such as the 4′ x 8′ Ritz-Carlton Hotel wall of aspen trees. Inspired by Nature, an organic thread flows through my work reflecting the unlimited variety of surface textures, patterns, and energy I find in my natural surroundings. With clay as my medium, I express these influences with a twist of a trompe l’oeil effect. I enjoy creating artworks that allow me to bring the essence of the outdoors into interior spaces.”

“In November we moved to the East Coast’s rural area one hour north from Boston! I am enjoying my new studio and almost finished sculpting my first piece, The Siren, inspired by the woods that surrounds us. As I am writing this, snowflakes descent gently behind the windows. White blanket is covering the surroundings to regenerate life for a fresh start”

Barbara Brown’s New Year Studio Cleaning Ritual

“Every year as the year ends I do a studio cleaning ritual so I can start the new year with purpose and good energy. My ceramic artist friend, Bea Wax introduced me to the American Indian tradition called Smudging by giving me a sage smudge stick. You clean your studio and then light the smudge stick till it smokes and walk around the perimeter of your studio, giving special attention to corners and places behind doors. Have ready a fireproof receptacle such as a shell, glass or ceramic dish to put the smudge stick in when you’re finished and make sure your smudge stick is out before leaving the studio.

On New Year’s day I go to the studio and make at least one new piece of work to start the new year with
purpose and good energy.

Have a wonderful, Happy New Year filled with creative energy.
