My work is inspired by the traditional crafts and folk art of many cultures, by the creations of ancient civilizations and by the visual variety found in nature. I work primarily in clay and glass and often combine these two materials to create vessels, wall pieces, and abstract figures.
My work explores the patterns, designs and cultural motifs that I’ve encountered in travels and discovered in museums. I translate these into textures; carving and impressing designs into the moist clay. I’m always searching for objects that will make interesting marks. My prized collection of “texture tools” has been gathered in foreign countries as well as on walks in the woods. In this simple way, my art is a reflection of my experiences.
Through my process of collecting and combining elements from nature and various cultures, I create objects that share my sense of curiosity about the world, and hopefully are also interesting and intriguing to viewers.
