Narrative

My art is born, expressed in clay. Timeless, subtle, useful and beautiful.
In clay are my feelings; into the deep center I pull: it becomes a bowl.
To make pottery is to give form to what I love.
Through my bare hands the body and soul meet; Spirit in a vessel, tried by kiln fire.
A collaboration of the four elements: earth, air, fire, water.

I live in San Francisco, on the Pacific Rim, alive with plate tectonics and Asian art. My work is inspired by the traditional processes of ancient kilns. This influence has channeled through me.

A firing at the wood kiln in Grass Valley, CA, in 1985, began my most serious work. Also known as “Anagama Mama,” I acquired a taste for crusty surfaces and have fired in several wood-fire kilns in California and Oregon. Each piece is conceived and prepared according to the conditions of the kiln in which it will be fired, be it an anagama, noborigama, or reduction gas kiln. I often add native materials to my clay to yield rustic effects from the flame. Wood-fired pots are like stones in a river, impacted on one side and quiet on the other, showing traces of life’s dualities which are expressed aesthetically by rough and smooth. My work represents a lifetime of work, study, and travel, seeing first-hand the way what we make is integrated into the human experience.
