The labyrinth is an important theme for me and a recurring motif in my work. Unlike mazes, labyrinths are unicursal and represent the journey from birth to death, where the twists and turns symbolize the choices we make and the struggles we endure along the way.
In my "Basket Series", I explore the simple geometric designs used in pottery and handwoven baskets of the Native Americans of the Southwestern US. I attempt to reproduce not only the texture of the baskets in clay but also the emotion and the deep sense of spiritualism these designs exude.
The circle is another shape that resonates with me and occurs frequently in my works. In my "Circle Series", I have been experimenting with different forms and different glaze combinations to produce striking contrasts.
